Nowadays, the majority of Open-Source Software is created by decentralized teams of engineers who work online. The GitHub portal is an online social network that facilitates software development by virtual programming teams. Because there is no centralized structure that determines the establishment of teams, it would be interesting to see if there are any significant links between project quality and team member attributes. However, solid project quality indicators are required for such analysis to be possible. This study develops two such measures, the first of which reflects the popularity of the project, and the second of which reflects the quality of help provided by team members to users. The first measure is based on the number of’stars’ a project receives from other GitHub users, while the second is derived from survival analysis techniques applied to issues reported by users on the project. We gathered features of various GitHub projects after generating the metrics and studied their impact on project quality using statistical regression techniques.
